I recently got the new Nikon D780 full-frame DSLR for an hour to test and used it to see how well it performs when recording 4K N-Log footage. You can see the before and after shots below. Nothing special, just a few scenes of Frankfurt’s riverside during sunset.
Recorded in Ultra HD (3840×2160). Color corrected and graded in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2020 using Lumetri.
I got two lenses that I used on the D780: The Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR tele-photo zoom and the 16-35mm f/4G ED VR wide-angle lens.
It’s not a camera that I would recommend getting if your main focus is to record video. It’s just an average performing tool and nothing that pushes the boundaries. To be honest at this point it feels kind of weird to be shooting video with a big DSLR rather than a compact mirrorless camera. I know that a lot of photographers prefer an optical viewfinder. But having an electronic viewfinder (EVF) is just so much more convenient when filming. But I guess it’s all about personal preference and habits.
